Welcome to the site of Southangus Border Collies

Our Breeding Dogs are:

  • Primarily family pets who have the run of the family home and back garden and company all day long most days.
  • Blessed with excellent temperaments; good with children; other dogs; and our cat Bizzie.
  • Fed currently on "Burns" or "Barking Heads" depending on their age or stage.
  • Regularly exercised in a variety of different environments such as local parks, the countryside and the beach areas. We are fortunate in living only a few minutes from these.
  • DNA Tested clear for CEA/CH, CL and TNS .
  • Eye tested annually for PRA and both Rowan and Belle are tested clear of Glaucoma.
  • Regularly wormed and given annual health checks and vaccinations. Our bitches are also vet checked prior to being used for breeding.
  • Fit, healthy and allowed the time they need to recover from pregnancy, whelping and raising pups.
  • Not bred from under 2 years of age, nor every season, nor after they are 8 years old (normally not past age 6).

We aim to breed sound, happy, healthy, good looking and well socialised pups, the sort we would like ourselves. We currently have 2 breeding bitches. Belle whose first litter was born in June 2007 and second litter in August 2009 and Rowan who had her first litter in November 2007 and second in May 2009. Rowan is dual registered (KC/ISDS). Belle is KC registered. Both can be seen within this site.

Woody at 6 weeks
Woody all grown up

Remember that the cute little pup on the left - 'Southangus Woody' - at 6 weeks will become the handsome chap on the right. Woody competes with his owner in agility.
  • A border collie is an intelligent and active dog - needs lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Will get bored if left alone in the house for too long in which case the house may suffer if the correct steps are not taken.
  • Will require training from an early age to ensure that he/she will not become a nuisance to other people.
  • Can live for up to 15/16 years.
  • Our dogs have rough coats and this will result in - you guessed it - HAIR. This can be more evident twice a year during the spring and autumn moult but can easily be overcome by regular grooming.
  • There is also the question of vet bills. Even healthy dogs will require visits to the vet for health checks and inoculations. In more acute cases then obviously the bills can mount up. The sensible approach to this is to insure your dog. That way you get peace of mind and the vet still gets his cut.
  • Another sensible cost, but a one off is to have your puppy microchipped/tattoed. This minor and painless procedure means that if your dog does wander off and is picked up he can be scanned and re-united with you. All our pups are microchipped before they go to their new homes.

This all sound like serious stuff but there are more ups than down to border collie ownership. You will have a companion who will never question you, will pinch your seat at every given opportunity (see training above), may also snatch your lunch given the chance and still look for dinner bang on time. Border Collies are super intelligent and very affectionate animals who only ask for a little of your time each day in return for years of pleasure and company.
